
A Serendipitous Swarm: How a Swiss Train Station Revealed an Entomological Jackpot
The unexpected discovery of a highly endangered wild bee species in Graubünden highlights the quiet efficacy of localized conservation.

Waiting for a train in the Swiss mountains can occasionally yield more than just an appreciation for punctual public transport. In the small municipality of Schmitten, nestled within the Graubünden canton, an idle moment at the station led to an unexpected ecological jackpot. Regina Lenz, a bee specialist and deputy managing director of the Parc Ela nature reserve, spotted a metallic-blue shimmer among the local cruciferous plants. What she initially questioned as an oddity turned out to be a swarm of mustard blue-shining sand bees, a highly endangered species rarely seen in such numbers.
The sheer volume of the sighting is what elevates this from a mere footnote to a biological sensation. Lenz observed at least fifteen female bees simultaneously buzzing around the vegetation. For an insect that is firmly entrenched on the Swiss Red List of threatened species, this constitutes a massive gathering. Historically, sightings in Switzerland have been vanishingly rare, with isolated appearances in the Chur Rhine Valley, Bergün, or the Domleschg region.
Entomologists are treating the discovery with appropriate gravity. Christophe Praz, a wild bee expert at the national fauna data centre Info Fauna, confirmed the exceptional nature of the find. He noted that over the past two decades, the species had been recorded only a handful of times in western Switzerland, and invariably as solitary insects. Praz classifies the Schmitten population as the largest known occurrence of the species in the country in recent years.
The sudden flourishing of these metallic-blue insects is not entirely accidental. It reflects a dual mechanism of shifting climate patterns and highly localized, well-funded conservation efforts typical of the wealthy Alpine nation. While rising temperatures facilitate the migration of such species, they can only establish themselves if the ground conditions are hospitable. Parc Ela has actively cultivated specific flowering plants tailored to wild bees. Praz attributes the success directly to these targeted habitat improvements, noting that species expansion requires high-quality environments to take root.
Exactly how the bees arrived in Parc Ela remains a matter of scientific speculation. They may have migrated along the Hinterrhein from the Chur Rhine Valley, but tracing their exact flight path is impossible. Regardless of their origin, the local conservationists are already planning their next steps. Lenz intends to locate the nesting sites and expand the cultivation of the flora that attracts them. The park benefits from a highly diverse topography, ranging from mountain forests to dry meadows, offering a resilient microclimate for various threatened species.
In a move characteristic of Switzerland’s quaint but effective approach to local community engagement, the park management is now seeking to give the bee an official Romansh name. The intention is to foster a closer cultural connection between the local population and their newly discovered six-legged residents. It is a charmingly naive yet pragmatic strategy: locals are far more likely to protect an insect if they can pronounce its name in their ancestral tongue.
