
The Analog Defense: When Cyberwarfare Breaches the Physical World
Digital firewalls are failing to protect critical infrastructure from state-aligned hackers, making manual overrides our ultimate security measure.

For years, the popular imagination of a cyberattack involved a shadowy syndicate draining bank accounts or locking corporate databases. The reality emerging today is far more tangible and significantly more dangerous. Hackers are no longer just after passwords; they are after the physical environment.
When a British power plant is forced offline for four days due to a digital intrusion, the era of purely virtual cybercrime is decisively over. The United Kingdom's government dutifully assured the public that the wider energy grid was never at risk during the incident. Such diplomatic assurances miss the broader point. A small facility was breached, proving that the digital locks on physical infrastructure can be picked by anyone with sufficient motivation.
Across the Atlantic, the vulnerability of essential public services is equally apparent. Water and wastewater systems in no fewer than 12 states in the United States have suffered recent intrusions. In Minnesota alone, over 30 community water systems were compromised. A separate breach in Georgia triggered a sudden drop in water pressure, forcing a local boil-water advisory.
While Washington has refrained from officially attributing these specific attacks to Tehran, security reports consistently point toward hacker syndicates aligned with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The conflict in the Middle East is clearly no longer confined by geography. A digital strike can originate in Tehran and disrupt a municipal tap in rural Georgia just as easily as it might hit a neighboring state.
The core vulnerability lies in our relentless drive for operational efficiency. Modern societies demand that electricity generation, water treatment, and transit networks operate flawlessly, managed by internet-connected programmable logic controllers. These industrial devices bridge the digital and physical realms. By targeting them, state-aligned actors bypass traditional data theft to directly manipulate valves, pumps, and turbines.
Crucially, infrastructure does not exist in a vacuum. Water treatment requires electricity; energy grids rely on telecommunications; hospitals depend on all three. A localized disruption can cascade through these interconnected networks, amplifying the damage far beyond the initial point of entry.
Corporate and state cybersecurity strategies remain stubbornly fixated on keeping intruders out. This is a comforting but dangerous delusion. Defensive perimeters will inevitably fail, and attackers do not even need to aim for catastrophic destruction.
Merely demonstrating the capability to infiltrate a minor facility provides valuable intelligence, political leverage, and public panic. Resilience, therefore, requires assuming the firewall has already been breached. The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently offered a piece of remarkably analog advice to American water utilities: practice reverting to manual controls in the event that automated systems are compromised.
The ultimate defense against digital warfare might just be analog readiness. If critical infrastructure operators discover their operational weaknesses only after the monitors go dark, the battle is already lost. Security in the modern age means accepting that our sophisticated digital networks are fundamentally fragile, and that true resilience lies in the ability to operate without them.
