Saxony CDU Treasurer Matthias Grahl Resigns Over Party Policy
The long-serving official cited dissatisfaction with economic, energy, and coalition strategies ahead of the regional party conference.

The state treasurer of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Saxony, Matthias Grahl, has resigned from his post with immediate effect in protest against the leadership's policy direction. The CDU state association confirmed the departure of the 56-year-old official shortly before its upcoming regional party conference.
In a letter dated November 4, Grahl sharply criticised the party's ongoing decisions regarding economic, social, migration, and energy policy. He stated that despite growing demands from voters for political change, he saw no willingness within the party leadership to implement substantive corrections. Grahl, who has managed the financial affairs of the Saxon CDU for nearly nine years, works as managing director of a metal construction company and leads the CDU group in the Bautzen district council.
A central point of contention raised in the letter is the political situation in the Saxon state parliament, where the CDU relies on cooperation with the Left Party and Alliance 90/The Greens, particularly during budget negotiations. Grahl argued that this collaboration damages the state and places burdens on future generations. He noted that he had repeatedly voiced his concerns within the party's executive board but failed to secure sufficient backing for his position from fellow board members.
Grahl stated that he accepts the majority decisions within the party bodies but no longer sees a possibility of shaping policy from within the executive board. He confirmed that he will step down from the state executive while continuing his work in municipal politics and devoting more time to his business. The Saxony CDU has not yet named a successor for the position of state treasurer, though Grahl offered to assist with the transition of official duties.
