Iran Negotiator Links US Midterm Results to Conflict as Maritime Incidents Continue

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has interpreted the defeat of the Republican Party in the United States midterm elections as a clear rejection of war by American voters. Writing on the social media platform X, Ghalibaf stated that Tehran endorsed this stance, while US President Donald Trump acknowledged that the conflict with Iran and associated fuel price increases had influenced the congressional election results.

Trump told CBS News that the poor electoral performance of Republican candidates was partly driven by the war, though he maintained that he did not regret initiating a joint military attack with Israel against Iran in February. The US president indicated that military action would conclude only on his timeline, adding in an interview with the Financial Times that forces remained locked and loaded if we need to go, but there may be no need for it. He also warned that full-scale military conflict could resume if no agreement is reached with Tehran.

Indirect negotiations mediated by Qatar to resolve the crisis remain stalled after an earlier preliminary agreement collapsed in June. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his administration has sought a resolution through dialogue, noting that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei granted authority to negotiate on topics previously deemed off-limits. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqai stated that Iran’s proposal, originally submitted in September, has been condensed to allow for rapid implementation within two days if accepted.

Concurrently, military tension and maritime disruptions persist in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route where the US military provides escort for commercial oil tankers. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that four tankers caught fire after striking naval mines in the waterway, claiming to have intercepted two vessels navigating a prohibited southern route. The UK Maritime Trade Operations centre confirmed that a tanker was hit by two projectiles 14 nautical miles north-east of Limah, Oman, on Tuesday evening, with no casualties reported.

Additional security incidents in the area include an attack on Monday north-east of Limah that killed an Indian crew member of a sailing dhow, with 13 other crew members rescued by Omani authorities. The IRGC also reported shooting down a US MQ-9 drone over the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. This followed a previous drone incident on Monday night, after which US forces conducted limited strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island in response to Iranian fire on American aircraft.
