Fatal Helicopter Collision Near Mount Everest Base Camp Claims Tourist's Life
An Indian passenger died and two others were injured during a simultaneous landing attempt in Pheriche.

An Indian tourist died and two other people sustained injuries after two helicopters collided while landing near the Mount Everest base camp in eastern Nepal. The incident occurred at approximately 08:15 local time in the village of Pheriche, located roughly 12 kilometres south of the base camp at an altitude of over 4,000 metres.
Helicopter operator Fishtail Air identified the deceased passenger as Vasanth Kumar Balaramudu. According to statements from the company and local district official Bhupendra Thapa, the two injured individuals were the aircraft's captain and a tourist from New Zealand. Both injured survivors were subsequently evacuated from the mountain site and transported to Kathmandu for medical treatment.
The collision involved the passenger aircraft operated by Fishtail Air and a cargo helicopter operated by Air Dynasty. Air Dynasty confirmed that its aircraft was piloted by a single crew member, who escaped the incident without sustaining any injuries. Bystanders at the scene rushed to the crash site immediately after the impact occurred.
Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Gyanendra Bhul stated that preliminary findings indicate the accident took place as both aircraft attempted to land simultaneously at the same location. Verified video footage from the scene showed clear weather conditions without strong visible winds, with one helicopter making a more rapid descent before the rotor blades of the two aircraft clipped each other.
The village of Pheriche serves as a primary stop on the trekking route toward Mount Everest and sits at an elevation of more than 4,000 metres above sea level. Aviation transport is heavily relied upon across the region due to the difficult Himalayan terrain, though high altitudes and sudden weather changes frequently complicate flight operations. The crash occurred during the autumn mountaineering season, with several climbing expeditions currently under way for Mount Everest and nearby Ama Dablam.
