The Bella Tola glacier, perched at an altitude of 3,025 metres above the village of Saint-Luc in the Valais, has apparently ceased to exist. According to reports from the newspaper Le Nouvelliste featuring rather desolate photographs of residual snowfields, the ice mass has finally succumbed to the warming climate. It is a fate shared by an increasing number of small alpine glaciers, quietly vanishing while a highly educated, wealthy nation watches its iconic topography literally melt away.

Confirming the death of a glacier, however, is not a matter of simply looking at a photograph. Matthias Huss, who heads the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (GLAMOS), noted that independent verification is pending. Yet, the prognosis was never good. For the past five years, Bella Tola has essentially been on life support, lacking the characteristics of an active, healthy glacier. By the time the 2023 inventory was compiled, it had shrunk to a mere seven football fields in size.

The actual demise of these ice masses is a slow, unglamorous process of geological decay. As glaciers retreat, they become buried under debris and rock. Eventually, the distinction between a living glacier and dead ice—detached chunks that no longer move—becomes entirely blurred. In a display of typical Swiss precision, a glacier is officially struck from the national inventory once it shrinks below a single hectare. Final confirmation of Bella Tola’s eradication will simply have to wait for the next official survey to run through the well-oiled machinery of the state system.

This summer threatens to be particularly brutal for the remaining alpine ice. The season began with a distinct lack of winter snow, followed by a warm and dry April that triggered an early melt. Whether this year will surpass the disastrous record set in 2022—when the Swiss Academy of Sciences recorded a loss of over six percent of the country's total ice volume—is currently unclear. What is certain, according to glaciologists, is that dozens of small glaciers are expected to vanish entirely before the autumn. Size, rather than specific geographic location, remains the primary risk factor, though local conditions like shade and avalanche debris naturally play their part.

Bella Tola is merely a named casualty in a vast, ongoing retreat. Since 1970, approximately one thousand Swiss glaciers have disappeared. Between 2016 and 2023 alone, 160 ice masses were lost.

Most of these were small, unnamed patches of ice that vanished without fanfare. Bella Tola, being named and regularly measured, naturally attracts a bit more attention. It echoes the demise of the Pizol glacier seven years ago, an event that prompted environmental groups to stage a theatrical memorial service. One can only assume similar performative grief will follow for Bella Tola, while the Swiss administration efficiently updates its ledgers, adjusting to a future with slightly fewer frozen assets.
