Ukrainian Authorities Investigate Unrest Outside Kyiv Military Housing Facility
Security services probe suspected external influence in crowd actions while oversight bodies examine military misconduct allegations.

Ukrainian authorities have launched parallel criminal investigations into violent unrest outside a military housing facility near Kyiv and potential abuse of power by military personnel, law enforcement officials announced on Tuesday. The confrontation occurred in the suburb of Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, where roughly 100 people gathered following online claims regarding the treatment of soldiers.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) stated it has identified around 100 active participants in the gathering outside the private property. SBU Deputy Chief Ivan Rudnytskyi said investigators suspect the crowd was organised to abduct a National Guard serviceman who had previously left his unit without authorisation. Searches have been conducted at several residences, and at least one woman has been taken into custody.
The unrest began on Monday after social media posts characterised the location as a detention facility where servicemen were allegedly being mistreated in a basement. According to Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigation, the gathering escalated into clashes with police officers, during which gunfire was reported and police vehicles sustained damage. Media outlet Slidstvo.Info reported that an ambulance present at the scene bore the logo of a medical clinic that had closed in 2023, with the vehicle having been sold to private buyers in 2024.
Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi rejected claims that the property functioned as a torture facility. Simultaneously, the State Bureau of Investigation opened criminal proceedings into possible abuse of authority by military officials, examining housing conditions, allegations of coercion, and the physical state of the servicemen. Four soldiers were subsequently taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.
Presidential Office chief Kyrylo Budanov stated that the events did not occur without external influence and affirmed that the initiators would be identified and punished. The General Staff of Ukraine called for an objective investigation, emphasising the need to address military misconduct while protecting personnel from unlawful acts. Russian authorities have not commented on the events in Petropavlivska Borshchahivka.
