National Council Panel Backs 193 Million Francs for EU Erasmus+ Program
The foreign affairs committee voted 16 to 9 in favour of funding Swiss participation in the European education scheme for 2027.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council has voted to endorse a 193 million Swiss franc contribution to secure Switzerland's participation in the European Union’s Erasmus+ education exchange program for 2027. The committee recommended approval of the corresponding federal decree by 16 votes to 9, Parliamentary Services confirmed on Friday.
Under the committee's proposal, the full National Council will be asked to pass the commitment credit without modifications. Prior to taking the vote, the commission addressed and rejected multiple formal motions aimed at refusing entry into the discussion on the bill entirely.
The upper chamber of parliament, the Council of States, had previously voted in favour of allocating the 193 million Swiss francs for the education exchange program. The financial package was contentious during deliberations in the smaller chamber as well before it secured a majority.
The decision on Erasmus+ funding forms part of the ongoing parliamentary review of the comprehensive bilateral treaty package between Switzerland and the European Union. The Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council has not yet concluded its work on the total draft treaty, with several substantial policy areas still awaiting a final position.
Key open questions in the committee's work include specific measures relating to immigration regulation and the legal framework for public approval. Parliamentarians have yet to decide whether the final package of agreements should be subjected to a mandatory referendum or an optional referendum. The committee intends to finalize its overall deliberations on the European Union treaty package by mid-November.
