Melania Trump Hosts Russian and Ukrainian Officials at White House Following Local Truce
The US First Lady presented personal letters to both nations' leaders after facilitating humanitarian discussions in Washington.

United States First Lady Melania Trump hosted official delegations from Russia and Ukraine at the White House on Thursday to urge both countries to expand a recent humanitarian truce into a broader peace agreement. The White House stated that this event marked the first instance in American history where a First Lady personally facilitated direct diplomacy between representatives of two nations engaged in war.
The meeting brought together Kirill Dmitriev, a special envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova, alongside David Arakhamia, faction leader of the Servant of the People party in Ukraine's parliament, and Ukrainian human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets. During the event, the Ukrainian delegation presented Melania Trump with the Order of Princess Olga, first class, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had awarded her earlier in the week. The First Lady handed personal letters to the delegates to be delivered to President Putin and President Zelenskyy.
According to statements made by Mrs. Trump at the White House, her position as intermediary was set out in written agreements signed by both nations. She noted her involvement in operational planning, including the review of evacuation routes and de-mining efforts, and encouraged the delegations to view the recent truce as a foundation for broader talks. “Together, we can create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire,” Mrs. Trump said during her address.
The talks followed a six-day local ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, located in Ukraine’s Kherson region. The temporary pause allowed humanitarian aid supplies to reach the area and facilitated the evacuation of nearly 800 people from an estimated civilian population of 2,000. This represented the longest multi-day truce between Russian and Ukrainian forces since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as well as the first joint relief operation conducted in four years and eight months.
Accounts regarding the mediation of the Oleshky truce have diverged. The White House credited Melania Trump with mediating the arrangement, while Pope Leo XIV also separately appealed to both governments to allow humanitarian relief and civilian evacuations. The ceasefire expired on Sunday without an extension, and a strike on an aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhia region killed at least 40 people the following day, according to President Zelenskyy. Russia has not commented on the report.
New United States-brokered negotiations between representatives from Russia and Ukraine are scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11. The upcoming talks follow the diplomatic exchange held in Washington.
