Guatemalan Lawmaker and Three Police Officers Killed in Zacapa Ambush
Authorities launch an investigation into the shooting in eastern Guatemala, where no motive or suspects have been identified.

A Guatemalan member of parliament and three police officers died following an armed attack in the eastern department of Zacapa on Friday. Lawmaker Julio César Portillo Paz succumbed to his injuries in a hospital shortly after the shooting in the town of Río Hondo, according to statements from his political party and congressional leadership.
The three officers from the National Civil Police were killed at the scene while on duty. Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo directed national security forces to assist public prosecutors with the homicide investigation. Congress President Luis Contreras confirmed Portillo's death on Friday evening, offering condolences on behalf of the legislative body.
Portillo was elected to Congress in 2023 as a representative for the opposition Cabal party before switching his affiliation to the National Unity of Hope (UNE). The party is led by former First Lady Sandra Torres, who is expected to field a presidential candidacy in the country's general elections next year. Authorities have not yet publicly identified any suspects or announced a motive for the ambush.
The attack occurred in a municipality within a region long recognized by law enforcement for heavy drug trafficking activity. According to Guatemalan security authorities, the Zacapa department serves as an operational base for the Lorenzana family cartel, an organization with established ties to Mexico's Sinaloa cartel.
The shooting took place three weeks after former anti-corruption prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa was shot dead in Guatemala City. While that fatal attack raised concerns regarding targeted violence against public figures, investigators have not established a link between Solórzano Foppa's death and the ambush in Río Hondo.
