Swiss Federal Council to Raise Pension Interest Rate to 2.0 Percent
The government will increase the mandatory second-pillar minimum return by 0.75 percentage points starting in 2027.

The Swiss Federal Council has decided to raise the statutory minimum interest rate on mandatory occupational pension assets to 2.0 percent, effective from 1 January 2027. The adjustment represents an increase of 0.75 percentage points over the current benchmark.
Since 2024, mandatory balances within the second-pillar pension system have been subject to a minimum interest rate of 1.25 percent. In its official announcement on 4 November 2026, the Federal Council stated that the overall financial condition of occupational pension funds remains very solid. Government officials noted that this stable environment allowed for a clear upward adjustment of the rate, which also serves to compensate active insured members for cumulative inflation recorded since 2022.
The minimum interest rate determines the baseline return that pension institutions are legally required to credit to the mandatory portion of occupational savings held by active workers. For insured individuals with accumulated capital, the higher rate leads to a noticeable difference in annual asset growth.
An employee with 200,000 Swiss francs stored in their second-pillar account currently receives 2,500 francs per year in interest at the 1.25 percent rate. Once the 2.0 percent rate takes effect, the annual interest yield on that same balance will rise to 4,000 francs, adding 1,500 francs in earnings each year. Over a period of several years, this adjusted minimum return will generate several thousand francs in additional retirement savings for workers.
The Federal Council determines the minimum return for obligatory occupational pension schemes on a periodic basis. The new rate of 2.0 percent will become mandatory for all occupational pension funds operating within the federal framework starting at the beginning of 2027.
