Cyberattack Forces Closure of Swiss Butcher Shop

A branch of the butcher chain Lüthis Fleischwaren located in the Bernese municipality of Köniz has ceased operations temporarily following a targeted cyberattack on its electronic cooling infrastructure. Unidentified hackers manipulated the control systems governing the store's refrigeration and freezing units, resulting in severe temperature deviations across the facility.

The company detailed the incident in an information flyer issued to customers at the Köniz location. According to Lüthis Fleischwaren, the electronic manipulation created potential risks regarding temperature maintenance for stored meat products. To mitigate any potential food safety hazards, management disconnected the entire cooling system from the network and elected to shut the retail outlet until further notice.

The attack in Bern canton occurs against a backdrop of increasing cyber disruptions aimed at cold storage facilities across the European continent. Over the past several weeks, multiple European jurisdictions have documented severe hacker incursions targeting commercial refrigerators and industrial deep freezers. Outbreaks of these digital intrusions have been particularly frequent in France, where multiple facilities suffered operational interruptions due to compromised thermal controls.

The scope of cold-chain cyber manipulation has expanded beyond commercial food purveyors into critical healthcare infrastructure. On Wednesday, authorities received reports indicating that electronic control systems regulating cooling units for stored blood supplies had also been subjected to deliberate cyber manipulation.

Lüthis Fleischwaren confirmed that its Köniz facility will remain closed while the affected digital control systems undergo inspection and isolation from external networks. The company has not provided a definitive timetable for the resumption of business at the branch, maintaining that the offline status of the refrigeration system remains necessary to guarantee product integrity.
