Tenerife Holds Stadium Memorial for Striker Jesus De Miguel

Thousands of supporters, teammates, and football figures gathered on Saturday at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for a memorial service in honour of striker Jesus De Miguel. The 30-year-old Tenerife player died earlier in the week following a medical emergency triggered by an on-pitch collision during a Spanish second-division match.

The fatal incident occurred on Monday during a league fixture when De Miguel collided with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono. Following the impact, the forward suffered a cardiac arrest and was immediately transferred to an intensive care unit. Tenerife officially confirmed his death on Tuesday morning.

Saturday's 90-minute tribute took place directly on the pitch at Tenerife's home stadium, where a central stage was erected displaying a large black-and-white portrait of the player alongside the message "Forever Demi". The ceremony featured a video compilation highlighting De Miguel's debut for the club, which was accompanied by chants from the supporters in the stands.

Delegations from clubs across the top two tiers of Spanish football attended the ceremony, including Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno. Tenerife captain Enric Gallego addressed the stadium during the event, expressing the squad's deep difficulty in processing the sudden loss of their teammate, whom friends and colleagues referred to by his nickname Demi.

The ceremony included formal speeches from members of the Tenerife board of directors and concluded with a religious service on the field. Professional fixtures across all divisions in Spain observed a minute of silence over the weekend to mark De Miguel's passing.
