Claire Liu Defeats Alex Eala to Claim First WTA Title at Hong Kong Open
The American world number 102 won in straight sets, while Eala reached a career-high ranking after a breakthrough season.

American tennis player Claire Liu secured her maiden WTA Tour title on Sunday with a straight-sets victory over second seed Alex Eala at the Hong Kong Open. The 102nd-ranked American completed the final with a 6-3, 6-0 scoreline against her Philippine opponent.
The final concluded with Liu winning nine consecutive games following the opening games of the first set. Eala competed during the match with physical support, wearing heavy strapping on her right leg. With this result, Liu claimed her first career tournament victory on the WTA Tour.
Despite the loss in the final, Eala concluded a year marked by advancement in the professional rankings. The 21-year-old began the season ranked 50th in the world before reaching a career-high position of 17th entering the Hong Kong tournament. Official WTA ranking updates scheduled for the following week project Eala to climb further to world number 15.
The season for Eala featured an accomplishment in August when she won her first WTA Tour title in Washington, D.C. That victory established her as the first tennis player from the Philippines to win a WTA Tour tournament.
In post-match remarks delivered on court, Eala addressed the audience and her support team regarding the progression of her season. She stated that the year had positively altered her life and expressed pride in the collective effort required by her team to reach the final. She added that her recent accomplishments represented the initial stage of her professional journey.
