Switzerland Waives 1.5 Million Francs in Medical Costs for Italian Crans-Montana Victims

The Swiss Federal Council has decided to waive the reimbursement of 1.5 million Swiss francs in medical treatment costs for twelve Italian citizens injured during the fire disaster in Crans-Montana. Swiss President Guy Parmelin officially informed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of the decision. The decision applies specifically to the twelve individuals who received emergency medical care and treatment in Swiss healthcare facilities after surviving the blaze.

Under standard procedures, the reimbursement of medical treatment expenses for patients insured in EU member states is governed by the bilateral agreement on the free movement of persons between Switzerland and the European Union. In this instance, the Federal Council agreed to make an exception to the established regulatory framework. Government officials in Bern described the decision as a formal gesture of recognition for the cross-border assistance extended to Switzerland during the disaster.

Immediately following the outbreak of the fire in Crans-Montana, Switzerland received rapid, unbureaucratic, and free support from Italy alongside several other neighbouring countries through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. That emergency aid was provided to assist Swiss authorities in managing the initial crisis response. According to the Federal Council, waiving the subsequent medical bills corresponds directly to the principle of international reciprocity and solidarity.

In an official press release regarding the decision, the Federal Council stated that the Swiss government is aware of the unmeasurable suffering that rests on the families of the victims and on all those affected, who will suffer for the rest of their lives from the consequences of their severe injuries. The decision follows a series of bilateral discussions between Swiss and Italian government representatives concerning the coverage of emergency healthcare expenses. With this measure, the Swiss government concluded the formal resolution of the treatment costs with Rome.
