Stadium Punk and Moral Sermons: Die Toten Hosen Lecture Their Audience
From the safety of the stage, aging rock stars dismiss citizen anxieties and draw sweeping historical parallels.
When stadium-filling punk veterans decide to moonlight as moral arbiters, the result is rarely subtle. During a concert at the Hamburg racecourse in Bahrenfeld on August 27, Campino, the 64-year-old frontman of Die Toten Hosen, offered 35,000 fans a crash course in historical comparison. Anyone marking their ballot for the Alternative for Germany today, he declared to the crowd, is backing a neofascist party and would likely have voted for the NSDAP in the early 1930s.
The performance in Hamburg, footage of which quickly circulated across social media platforms, set a predictable tone. Campino warned that should the country's political trajectory end up severely damaged, he expected no whining from those voters. Portions of the audience duly responded with anti-Nazi chants. Two days later in Dresden, performing before an audience of 65,000 ahead of regional elections, the singer aimed directly at local political reality. Addressing the 40 percent support for the AfD in the region, he noted that 60 percent decidedly do not support them, before sending greetings to the local voter base, describing the band as their bad neighbors.
This lecture series is not limited to election results. Earlier in August during a concert in Hannover, Campino turned his attention to everyday public anxieties, labeling citizens fools if they believe German cities were safer in the past than they are today. In his estimation, widespread feelings of insecurity are merely an illusion manufactured by social media algorithms.
When confronted with the criticism that wealthy, highly successful musicians deliver moral certitudes from a position of economic privilege, the frontman remains entirely dismissive. The band was delivering the exact same core political messages back when they were playing in squatted houses, he argued, stating that attempts to discredit them on those grounds were of zero concern to him.
Die Toten Hosen are currently on their tour titled "Trink Aus! Wir Müssen Gehen", a run of shows the band describes as entering the final stretch of their career. The final announced date is set for July 10, 2027, in Düsseldorf. Until then, arena audiences can apparently expect political sermonizing served alongside their stadium anthems.
