Russia and Ukraine Trade Reciprocal Drone Strikes on Energy and Logistics Sites

Russia and Ukraine launched reciprocal overnight drone strikes targeting critical energy grids, logistics infrastructure, and industrial facilities across several regions, according to statements from officials on Thursday. The retaliatory aerial attacks resulted in casualties and infrastructure damage on both sides of the border.

In Russia's Ryazan region, located approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Moscow, Governor Pavel Malkov reported that more than 200 Ukrainian drones were launched over the area. Falling debris damaged local power lines and triggered fires at several industrial sites, injuring one person and causing temporary electricity blackouts across parts of the city. Verified footage from independent media showed a fire at the Ryazan oil refinery, an asset owned by Russian state energy firm Rosneft. Russian energy production has continued despite the strikes, though localized fuel spikes have occurred following attacks on refineries.

Russia's Defence Ministry stated that its forces used drones to hit a terminal operated by Nova Poshta, Ukraine's largest private delivery firm, in the village of Novyi Korotych outside Kharkiv. The ministry also reported strikes on a 330-kilovolt power substation in the Dnipropetrovsk region and a dry cargo vessel in the Black Sea, 52 kilometres southwest of Odesa, which Moscow claimed was carrying military equipment. Ukrainian officials did not immediately confirm the reports concerning the targeted vessel or the postal facility.

Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov stated that Russian forces attacked the regional capital and 17 surrounding settlements over the past day using more than 80 drones, injuring six people, including a child. In the eastern Donetsk region, local Governor Vadym Filashkin reported that four civilians were killed and five others injured on Wednesday, with two of the fatalities occurring when glide bombs struck the village of Yasnohirka. Additional overnight drone strikes hit the Bucha district near Kyiv, causing fires at a local logistics center and injuring one person.

The reciprocal strikes come amid sustained disruption to energy grids and municipal utilities. Systemic attacks on Ukraine's energy network have resulted in rolling power blackouts in Kyiv since mid-October. City authorities in the capital have indicated that municipal heating will remain switched off until temperatures remain at or below minus five degrees Celsius for five consecutive days.
