Marco Rubio Rejects Reports of Resignation from Trump Administration

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio rejected reports on Thursday that he intends to resign from the administration of President Donald Trump following the recent midterm election results. Speaking in an interview with The New York Times, Rubio stated that his intention has consistently been to remain in his post for the remainder of Trump's presidential term. Rubio, who also serves as national security adviser, addressed the speculation surrounding his status in the Cabinet following days of media reports.

The Secretary's remarks followed news reports suggesting he was evaluating his position in the wake of Republican losses in Tuesday's midterm elections. Bloomberg News had reported earlier on Thursday that Rubio discussed stepping down with White House officials, who reportedly asked him to remain in the administration. Officials at the Department of State promptly rejected the reports, with Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson characterizing the Bloomberg account as totally made up. Johnson also dismissed a report by The Independent regarding Rubio's political future, calling it completely baseless fake news.

Speculation regarding Rubio's tenure has coincided with broader discussion within the Republican Party regarding potential candidates for the 2028 presidential election. Shortly before the midterm vote, Rubio made an unusual joint appearance with Trump on the campaign trail, addressing a rally from the podium. In his interview on Thursday, Rubio declined to comment on any future presidential ambitions, stating that he would not speak further about the 2028 campaign. He added that he did not know the origin of the rumors regarding his exit from the Cabinet.

Rubio is widely viewed alongside Vice President JD Vance as a prospective contender for the Republican nomination in the next presidential election cycle. In previous comments, Rubio indicated that he would support Vance if the Vice President pursued a presidential bid in 2028. As of Thursday, the White House has not announced any planned personnel changes within the Cabinet following the midterm elections.
