Jon Ossoff Retains Georgia Senate Seat for Democrats
Incumbent defeats Republican challenger Mike Collins in key midterm contest following campaign focused on economic issues.

Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has secured re-election to the United States Senate in Georgia, defeating Republican challenger Mike Collins. The contest was projected shortly after polls closed in the state on Tuesday as part of the 2026 US midterm elections, which will establish the balance of power in Congress for the remaining two years of President Donald Trump's term.
During the campaign, Ossoff focused his messaging on the rising cost of living and economic affordability, which exit poll data identified as the primary concern for Georgia voters. Speaking to supporters at a gathering in Atlanta following the election projection, the Democratic senator stated that this moment is an opening not for restoration, but for reformation, while criticizing corporate interests and White House governance. Throughout the campaign, Ossoff had also sought to frame his Republican opponent as an ally of what he characterized as a failed presidential administration.
Collins rejected those arguments during the race, attributing elevated living costs to the policies of former President Joe Biden. The Republican candidate also defended his support for President Trump's military campaign in Iran. Although Georgia voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, national Republican campaign organizations diverted financial resources away from the state in the final weeks of the contest after polling indicated Ossoff held a stable lead.
The candidate field was shaped in part by the decision of Georgia's term-limited Republican Governor Brian Kemp not to enter the contest. Kemp had been viewed by party strategists as a strong potential contender, but declined to challenge the incumbent. Ossoff has repeatedly dismissed speculation regarding a potential campaign for the presidency in 2028, stating during the race that he maintained zero interest in a presidential bid.
