Evangelical Bishop Warns of Pre-emptive Compliance Ahead of Potential AfD Gains in Saxony-Anhalt

At the synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) in Würzburg, Magdeburg Regional Bishop Bettina Schlauraff warned of growing political pressure and anticipatory compliance linked to potential electoral gains by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt. Speaking to church delegates, Schlauraff stated that public institutions in the eastern state are already adjusting their behavior to avoid conflict with the party prior to any formal entry into state government.

The regional bishop pointed to specific instances in Saxony-Anhalt where public bodies altered established practices. According to Schlauraff, a local primary school recently stopped using church facilities for its annual report card distribution ceremony. In another instance in the state capital of Magdeburg, a university withdrew its participation from an action week organized under the campaign title "Science Against Fascism" out of concern over potential political measures or negative attention from future state authorities.

Schlauraff criticized the AfD for politically instrumentalizing Christian tradition, arguing that the party employs Christian faith primarily as a cultural marker to delineate boundaries against minority groups. She stated that the party utilizes intentional ambiguity in its public positioning to appeal to diverse voter groups while masking extremist elements. To counter these developments, the bishop called on church institutions and civil society to organize networks and maintain vigilance against social exclusion.

The bishop's statement forms part of a broader series of public interventions by Protestant leaders regarding political shifts in eastern Germany. In September, Friedrich Kramer, the bishop of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany, expressed similar concerns during an interview with broadcaster Phoenix. Kramer warned at the time that an AfD election victory in Saxony-Anhalt could exacerbate street-level hostility and violence directed at visible minorities.
