Byron Donalds Elected Florida's First Black Governor as Ashley Moody Retains Senate Seat

Republican Congressman Byron Donalds has won the gubernatorial election in Florida, making him the first Black governor in the state's history. In a simultaneous race, Republican candidate Ashley Moody won a special election to hold a seat representing Florida in the United States Senate. The results preserve Republican leadership in two major state offices amidst broader national election shifts.

Donalds ran for the governorship to succeed Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who was ineligible to seek another term due to statutory term limits. Prior to his gubernatorial victory, Donalds had represented Florida in the United States House of Representatives since 2021. His campaign received the explicit backing of President Donald Trump.

In the federal legislative contest, Ashley Moody secured her Senate seat against Democratic candidate Angie Nixon. The special election was conducted to fill the vacancy left by Marco Rubio, who departed the Senate to serve as Secretary of State. Nixon had previously achieved a surprise victory in her party's primary election to become the Democratic standard-bearer, though her campaign operated with significantly fewer funds than Moody's campaign.

The two Republican victories in Florida came at a time when the Democratic Party recorded widespread gains across the rest of the country. These national results granted Democrats full control of both the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. The transition in congressional power takes effect for the remaining two years of President Donald Trump's term in office.

Despite the nationwide shifts toward Democratic majorities in Congress, Florida voters maintained the Republican Party's executive governance in Tallahassee. Donalds will take over the governor's mansion following the conclusion of DeSantis's tenure, while Moody will serve out the remainder of Rubio's former Senate term.
