Gastroenteritis Locks Down 1,700 Cruise Passengers in Bordeaux After One Death

Around 50 people have fallen ill. Norovirus has been ruled out. Food poisoning is still on the table.

A cruise ship is not a great place to be when stomach bugs start spreading. For the 1,700 people aboard the Ambition in Bordeaux, that nightmare became a reality on Wednesday. French media reported that passengers and crew have been confined to the vessel after a suspected gastroenteritis outbreak left one person dead and dozens of others sick.

According to local health authorities, the ship's captain reported that up to around 50 passengers have experienced symptoms consistent with an acute digestive infection. Those passengers were immediately taken care of by the ship's doctor and isolated in their cabins. The regional health agency in Nouvelle-Aquitaine said a medical team has been dispatched on board to carry out a health situation assessment, and samples are currently being collected by the infectious disease department of Bordeaux University Hospital.

The Ambition, part of the Ambassador Cruise Line company, left the Shetland Islands north of Scotland on May 6. It stopped in Belfast in Northern Ireland and Liverpool in England before reaching Bordeaux, from where it was scheduled to depart for Spain. That itinerary is now on hold.

French health authorities were quick to rule out any connection to another recent cruise ship health scare. "There is no reason to draw any connection between this outbreak aboard a cruise ship arriving from Belfast and Liverpool and the hantavirus cases detected on the MV Hondius," they said.

As a precautionary measure, given the contagious nature of gastroenteritis-type illnesses and pending the results of the samples, local authorities have decided to suspend the disembarkation of passengers and crew and limit interactions with the port. In other words, no one is getting off until officials know what they are dealing with.

Initial tests ruled out an outbreak of norovirus, the highly contagious form of gastroenteritis known for causing vomiting and diarrhoea. But secondary tests were still underway. Food poisoning has not been excluded as a possible cause. Officials added that passengers on board showed peak symptoms on Monday, when the ship was docked in Brest.

Gastroenteritis outbreaks, while uncommon relative to the total number of voyages, tend to make news precisely because of the enclosed environment. The United States' Vessel Sanitation Program has registered four outbreaks in 2026 so far: two related to norovirus and two from E. coli.

Vikram Niranjan, assistant professor in public health at the University of Limerick in Ireland, wrote in The Conversation that food service plays a big part in this risk. Buffet-style dining, shared utensils, and many people touching the same surfaces can make it easier for stomach bugs to spread.

So for now, the Ambition sits in Bordeaux. Passengers wait. Samples are analysed. And one family is grieving. The only certainty is that whatever hit this ship, it hit fast, and it hit hard.
