Israel Summons Italian Envoy Over Lebanon Remarks
Diplomatic friction intensifies between Rome and Jerusalem following foreign minister's Beirut visit and earlier incident involving Italian UN peacekeepers.

Israel summoned Italy's ambassador on Monday in a formal protest over remarks made by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani during an official visit to Beirut, according to an Italian diplomatic source. The summons followed Tajani's public condemnation of what he characterized as "unacceptable attacks" by Israeli forces against the civilian population in Lebanon.
Tajani, a senior figure within Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government, traveled to the Lebanese capital on Monday for scheduled discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi. While there, he posted a statement on the social media platform X outlining the purpose of his visit. He wrote that he had come to "convey Italy's solidarity following Israel's unacceptable attacks against the civilian population." The foreign minister further called for renewed dialogue between Lebanon and Israel and emphasized the urgency of establishing a "necessary and lasting ceasefire." He added a cautionary note, stating that "another escalation like in Gaza must be avoided at all costs."
The diplomatic exchange occurs against the backdrop of an expanding regional conflict. Lebanon was drawn into active hostilities when Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant and political organization, launched rocket fire toward Israeli territory on March 2. That action came days after coordinated US-Israeli strikes resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In the period since, Israel has conducted extensive aerial bombardments and initiated a ground incursion into Lebanese territory. The Israeli military stated on Monday that operations conducted in Lebanon the previous week had resulted in the deaths of five Hezbollah commanders along with more than 250 fighters affiliated with the group.
The current diplomatic strain follows a separate incident that occurred last week involving Italian forces operating under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. Italy's government summoned Israel's ambassador at that time after asserting that Israeli troops had fired warning shots in the direction of a convoy carrying Italian UN peacekeepers. The incident resulted in damage to at least one vehicle, though no injuries were reported.
