Belgian authorities have intercepted and seized a shipment of military equipment originating from the United Kingdom that was destined for Israel, opening an investigation into the cargo that passed through Liège Airport. The action follows a tip from non-governmental organizations who identified irregularities in the freight documentation accompanying the shipment.

Customs officials opened and confiscated 33 crates after the manifest discrepancies were flagged. The contents, according to official accounts, included laser sights, fire control systems, and spare components intended for fighter aircraft. The nature of the seized items places the shipment squarely within the scope of Belgium's recently tightened restrictions on arms transfers to Israel.

According to reporting by The Canary, the cargo was booked for transport aboard Challenge Airlines, a carrier that has been documented operating regular flights to Israeli destinations. The airline's involvement has drawn additional scrutiny given Belgium's evolving legal framework governing such transits.

The seizure occurs against a backdrop of escalating legal and regulatory measures adopted by Belgian authorities. A Brussels court ordered the Flemish region in 2025 to halt the transit of military equipment through its territory when bound for Israel. Building on that judicial directive, Belgium implemented a more comprehensive ban in January 2026. The new prohibition extends to overflights and technical stopovers by any aircraft carrying weapons or military matériel to Israel. The measures were adopted with explicit reference to the ongoing war in Gaza.

The incident at Liège Airport represents one of the first significant tests of the January embargo. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is now underway to determine the full circumstances of the shipment, including the chain of custody, the accuracy of the filed documentation, and potential violations of Belgian and European export control regulations. The seized equipment remains in the custody of customs officials pending the outcome of the inquiry.
