The Ultimate Vanity Project: Heidi Klum’s Body-Scanned Hand
At her annual New York Halloween gathering, the model turned self-absorption into a high-budget spectacle by wearing a giant bloody replica of her own limb.

Celebrity culture has long operated on the principle that the self is the ultimate commodity, but Heidi Klum took the metaphor to a literal, bloody extreme at her annual New York Halloween gathering. Encased inside a giant, hyper-realistic replica of her own left hand, the former model turned personal anatomy into a massive engineering project. Designed in collaboration with special effects makeup artist Mike Marino, the grotesque construction relied on precise body scans to ensure every detail was enlarged, right down to her engagement ring, wedding ring, and the tattoo bearing her husband Tom Kaulitz’s name.
The concept reportedly originated a year prior during a moment of self-contemplation, when Klum looked at her hand and decided her entire body could somehow fit inside an expanded copy of it. What might sound like a bizarre thought experiment in everyday life was promptly transformed into high-budget public theater. Marino, who previously helped bring Klum's past costume concepts to life—including a peacock, a giant worm, Medusa, E.T., and Fiona from the animated film Shrek—once again provided the technical craft required for the transformation.
Notably missing from the main event was Klum's husband, Tom Kaulitz, who was unavailable due to a concert engagement in Germany. Kaulitz had historically served as an accessory to Klum's elaborate themes, dressing as an egg to her peacock, a fisherman to her worm, and a petrified figure beside her Medusa. Klum remarked to Bunte magazine that while she would have preferred to hold hands with her husband, logistics prevented him from being in two places at once.
In Kaulitz’s absence, family and celebrity acquaintances filled the room. Her daughter, Leni Klum, arrived outfitted as Miss Piggy, featuring pig ears, XXL eyelashes, and a purple feather boa. Other attendees included actors Kyle MacLachlan and Neil Patrick Harris, the latter arriving alongside his husband David Burtka as a pair of creepy twins.
The extravagant display contrasted with a smaller gathering held the evening before at Klum's pizzeria in the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan. Appearing without the massive prosthetic appendage, Klum opted for an orange dress and black boots. The brief return to conventional attire only underscored the ambition of the main event, proving that in the contemporary entertainment circus, even one's own limbs can be scaled up for public amusement.
