Reality Check in Lombardy: Manchester United Routed as Como Exposes English Decay
A resounding 4-1 defeat in the Champions League extends Michael Carrick’s winless streak to seven matches.

When heavy spending meets tactical discipline, top-tier European football has a habit of delivering harsh lessons. Manchester United’s lingering stagnation reached a new low on Wednesday evening, dismantled 4-1 by an efficient Como side in the Champions League. For manager Michael Carrick, the painful display in Italy pushes his team’s winless streak across all competitions to seven matches, stripping away any lingering illusions of a quick turnaround.
The Italian hosts required little invitation to tear through their visitors. A double from Nico Paz led the charge, exposing structural defensive frailties that Carrick appears entirely incapable of fixing. While English clubs continue to trade on brand prestige and inflated market valuations, Como demonstrated the ruthless efficacy of a well-drilled side, leaving United adrift and desperate for answers.
Elsewhere in Europe’s premier competition, class ultimately told for Real Madrid, who secured their own 4-1 victory over Leipzig. Late strikes from Kylian Mbappé and Yan Diomandé broke German resistance to confirm the outcome. For French football, however, Wednesday offered no such comfort. Both Lille and Lens suffered heavy, embarrassing defeats, capping off a grim night for Ligue 1 representatives on the continental stage.
Away from the pitch, individual endurance provided a brief counterpoint in Belgium. Local tennis veteran David Goffin postponed his retirement by at least another day, battling back to win his first-round match at his farewell tournament in Brussels. Meanwhile, American sports entertainment pushed further into the European market, as the New Orleans Saints conducted training in Versailles ahead of their upcoming NFL Paris Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Yet the central narrative remains United's relentless slide. Seven games without a win is no longer a temporary fluctuation in form; it is an indictment of management and squad structure. As Carrick leaves Italy with four goals in his net, the distance between reputation and performance has rarely looked so wide.
