Mélenchon Capitalises on Youth Support Ahead of 2027 French Election
Polling indicates the founder of La France Insoumise could reach the presidential runoff alongside Marine Le Pen.

Far-left political figure Jean-Luc Mélenchon is building his campaign for the 2027 French presidential election on a foundation of youth support, following recent appearances at student-led demonstrations and general strikes in Paris. Polling data suggests that the founder of La France Insoumise, who secured the majority of votes among 18- to 34-year-olds in the 2022 presidential race, may qualify for the final runoff against polling leader Marine Le Pen.
The platform of La France Insoumise emphasizes policy measures aimed at combating climate change, redistributing wealth, and initiating what the party describes as a citizen's revolution to reform public governance. To mobilize younger cohorts, the party operates a specialized youth organization, Jeunes Insoumis.es, which conducts outreach through social media and street campaigns, alongside an annual summer convention for supporters under the age of 26.
Livia Jampy, a 25-year-old Montpellier city council member and co-chair of the party's youth organization, stated that younger voters comprehend the party's objectives despite external dismissals. Political scientist Thibault Muzergues noted that frustration among youth has driven demand for structural political change, describing the electorate's alignment not as a temporary protest vote but as a rejection of existing institutional frameworks.
Despite his backing among younger voters, Mélenchon remains a controversial figure across the broader French electorate. Political opponents have linked his encouragement of student protests to recent civil unrest, prompting French President Emmanuel Macron to state that political forces were exploiting young demonstrators.
Mélenchon has also drawn criticism regarding his international stances, including accusations of anti-Semitism following the October 7, 2023 attacks in Israel. During previous presidential campaigns, opponents frequently targeted his proposals to withdraw France from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and questioned his position regarding Russia.
