At Least 30 Dead and Dozens Missing After Torrential Rains Hit Southeast Brazil

State of emergency declared in Juiz de Fora as record rainfall triggers floods and landslides

No fewer than 30 people have lost their lives, with dozens still unaccounted for, after relentless downpours hammered southeastern Brazil, turning entire neighborhoods upside down and unleashing a cascade of floods and landslides. Juiz de Fora.

The city’s been pushed to the brink, now under an official state of emergency while frantic efforts continue to locate at least 39 residents who haven’t turned up. Grim tally: local officials say 16 deaths occurred in Juiz de Fora alone. In response, every public school in town has shut its doors for now, while first responders fan out across battered districts searching for survivors.

But it doesn’t stop there, about 100 kilometers away, Ubá took a heavy hit as well. City authorities reported six fatalities after swollen riverbanks spilled over into downtown streets and homes alike. Here’s the thing: that region’s steep hills only make matters worse when rain falls this hard. Landslides. Almost inevitable under these conditions, especially with the ground so saturated it can barely hold together.

Meteorologists aren’t offering much comfort either; they’re already warning that more rain is on the horizon,a worrying sign that instability could get even worse before anything improves. Juiz de Fora just notched its rainiest February since anyone started keeping tabs, Mayor Margarida Salomão confirmed. She pointed out rainfall totals are already more than twice what’s typical for this time of year, a situation she calls nothing short of critical. Over 400 people have had no choice, but to evacuate due to floodwaters or fear their homes might give way altogether. Three days of official mourning have been declared as stunned communities try to process what’s happened, and brace themselves for whatever comes next.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva wasted no time ordering federal aid mobilized straightaway to help cities pick up the pieces (and hopefully prevent things from spiraling further). Via social media, he reached out directly with words of sympathy for families grieving lost loved ones and uprooted lives, the sheer heartbreak is palpable. Rescue crews remain on high alert, combing through debris-strewn areas and submerged streets as they begin piecing together just how widespread the destruction really is. With fresh storms looming in forecasts. The situation remains touch-and-go,a stark reminder we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg here.
