Trump Signals Hungary Visit as Orbán Enters Crucial Election Season

A personal message from the US president highlights closer ties with Budapest and adds an international dimension to Hungary’s April vote

US President Donald Trump has indicated his readiness to travel to Hungary following an invitation from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a move that would come as the country prepares for a high-stakes parliamentary election in April.

In a letter shared publicly by Orbán, Trump confirmed his interest in visiting and described relations between Washington and Budapest as entering what he called a particularly strong phase. He pointed to potential cooperation in defence, energy policy and migration control, presenting these areas as shared priorities for both governments.

Praise and political timing

In the message, Trump commended Orbán’s leadership and framed it as an example internationally, citing values such as national sovereignty, family and faith. He also directly referenced Hungary’s upcoming election, wishing the prime minister success in the campaign.

The timing of the potential visit is politically sensitive. Opinion polls suggest Orbán’s long-governing Fidesz–KDNP alliance faces its most serious challenge in years from the opposition TISZA Party, led by Péter Magyar, which has been gaining ground in recent surveys.

Recent history of close ties

Trump last hosted Orbán in Washington in November, when the two leaders held talks that resulted in Hungary securing a one-year exemption from US secondary tariffs linked to Russian oil exports. During that visit, Orbán extended the invitation for Trump to come to Hungary.

In his latest letter, Trump wrote that his team would follow up to coordinate scheduling, signalling that the visit could realistically take place during the election campaign period.

Broader strategic context

The outreach to Orbán aligns with a wider approach outlined by the Trump administration last year, when it said it would strengthen relations with governments and political forces inside Europe that oppose the EU’s current direction. Hungary has frequently positioned itself as a dissenting voice within the bloc on issues ranging from migration to relations with Russia.

Trump has repeatedly spoken positively about Orbán in public appearances, describing him as a strong leader and praising his policies aimed at reducing illegal migration.

International attention on Hungary’s vote

If the visit goes ahead, it would place Hungary’s election campaign firmly in the international spotlight. For Orbán, the prospect of a high-profile appearance by the US president could reinforce his image as a leader with influential allies abroad. For his opponents, it underscores how closely domestic politics have become intertwined with global power dynamics.

With campaigning intensifying and polls tightening, Trump’s anticipated trip adds another unpredictable element to an already closely watched election season in Hungary.
