Ronaldo Flies to Spain as Iran Conflict Forces AFC Match Suspensions

Cristiano Ronaldo’s private jet departed Riyadh for Madrid after security concerns halted several Champions League games in the Gulf

Cristiano Ronaldo, the global football icon, made a swift exit from Saudi Arabia to Spain as mounting security risks, spurred by the intensifying Iran crisis, prompted Asian football officials to hit pause on several high-profile Gulf fixtures.

Here’s what happened: According to Flightradar24 data, Ronaldo’s private Bombardier Global Express jet lifted off from Riyadh just after 9 p.m. local time Monday, charting a course over Egypt and skimming across the Mediterranean before touching down in Madrid later that night. It all unfolded quietly, but not without reason.

Currently donning Al Nassr colors and residing in Riyadh alongside his partner Georgina Rodríguez and their five kids, Ronaldo found himself at the center of this upheaval.

His move coincided with an official statement from the Asian Football Confederation: eight matches in the AFC Champions League Elite's West Region, including Al-Nassr’s much-anticipated quarter-final faceoff with Al Wasl (originally set for Wednesday in Dubai),were being put on ice due to ongoing safety worries.

So why all this chaos. The answer lies in recent events shaking up the region, a string of missile and drone strikes swept through Gulf states following joint US-Israeli attacks that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Then came another jolt early Tuesday: two drones targeted the US Embassy compound in Riyadh itself. Saudi officials reported only minor fire damage and no casualties, but nerves were rattled.

It’s worth noting that while football across much of the Gulf is now facing disruption, matches involving East Asian clubs are still slated to go ahead as planned (at least for now).. As for Ronaldo, who has racked up an impressive tally of 22 goals from 26 games this season, the star striker remains under contract with Al Nassr through 2027.
