Tram Derails in Milan, Leaving One Dead and Dozens Injured

Line 9 vehicle crashes into building in city centre as prosecutors open investigation

A tram jumped the rails in central Milan on Friday afternoon, leaving at least one person dead and dozens more hurt after the vehicle careened off its path and slammed into a building.

This all unfolded just after 4 p.m. local time along Viale Vittorio Veneto. The Line 9 tram had been heading toward Porta Genova when things went sideways, literally, plowing into pedestrians before crashing straight through a shopfront, according to statements from Italy’s fire brigade. In total, emergency teams reported that 38 people were injured during the chaos.

One individual is clinging to life in critical condition; six others suffered serious injuries, while the rest escaped with relatively minor wounds. Paramedics tended to victims right there on the street before whisking several away to nearby hospitals for further care.. The response was swift: five rescue vehicles and around 25 firefighters converged on the scene almost immediately. Early rumors hinted someone could be trapped beneath the wrecked tram, but officials later set the record straight, no one was found underneath. Here’s where it gets official: Milan’s Public Prosecutor’s Office has stated that a formal inquiry will be launched into what exactly caused this derailment.

Marcello Viola, who heads up prosecutions in Milan, actually made his way over to survey things firsthand (as picked up by local media).. Right now. The reason behind this disaster is still anyone’s guess; authorities haven’t confirmed whether technical glitches, human slip-ups or outside elements played a role. Investigators wasted no time cordoning off the area as they started piecing together what happened,a real puzzle if ever there was one. Meanwhile public transport across parts of Milan hit some snags as emergency crews worked overtime securing the damaged tram and clearing away debris from the site.
