
Silicon Valley's Hardware Ambitions Spark a Predictable Espionage Dispute
Apple's lawsuit against OpenAI highlights the brutal shortcuts companies allegedly take when transitioning from software to physical devices.

The technology sector routinely witnesses fierce battles over talent, but the transition from software dominance to hardware manufacturing often invites a more aggressive breed of corporate conflict. Apple has initiated legal proceedings against artificial intelligence developer OpenAI, alleging a calculated campaign to siphon off confidential hardware specifications. The lawsuit targets both the company and two former Apple engineers, exposing the rather unglamorous mechanics of how Silicon Valley hardware divisions are sometimes bootstrapped.
At the centre of the dispute is OpenAI’s sudden ambition to build physical devices, an endeavour Apple claims is being fueled by stolen intellectual property. The complaint details a systematic raid on sensitive technical data, allegedly orchestrated by former Apple employees who were aggressively recruited by OpenAI. This recruitment drive supposedly doubled as an intelligence-gathering operation designed to bypass the arduous process of organic research and development.
The specific allegations present a picture of brazen corporate espionage. Chang Liu, a former senior system electrical engineer who departed Apple in January 2026, is accused of retaining his company laptop and skipping his exit interview. Apple claims Liu discovered a flaw in the company authentication systems, which he then exploited to download extensive files detailing unreleased hardware products and engineering presentations. The lawsuit also alleges Liu instructed a former colleague on how to bypass security protocols to copy files, advising her on which stolen materials to study before her own interview at OpenAI.
Even more prominent is the involvement of Tang Yew Tan, currently serving as the chief hardware officer at OpenAI. During his twenty-four years at Apple, Tan reached the position of vice president of product design, overseeing highly sensitive projects related to the iPhone and Apple Watch. Before his departure, he allegedly forwarded internal industry summaries and supplier information to his personal accounts. Once established at OpenAI, Tan reportedly instructed job applicants to bring physical Apple components to their interviews for practical demonstrations, essentially crowdsourcing competitive intelligence from prospective hires.
OpenAI has dismissed the allegations entirely. An official spokesperson for the firm stated that they have no interest in other companies' trade secrets and are solely focused on developing innovative technology for a global user base. However, the lawsuit coincides awkwardly with OpenAI’s promotional campaign for its new hardware division. The company recently previewed the Codex Micro, a programmable keyboard integrated with its artificial intelligence coding agent, slated for release on the fifteenth of July.
Apple maintains that the documented breaches represent merely a fraction of the actual misconduct, arguing that the entire foundation of OpenAI’s hardware business relies on misappropriated data. When a software company decides to suddenly manufacture physical goods, the learning curve is notoriously steep. If Apple’s allegations hold true, OpenAI simply decided to skip the ascent entirely by taking someone else's map.
