
Monetizing the Invasion: How a Swiss Startup is Turning Quagga Mussels into Cement
Artificial intelligence and underwater drones are being deployed in Lake Geneva to map an ecological disaster that scientists admit cannot be reversed.

Lake Geneva currently presents a picturesque, glass-like surface to the morning sun. The water is exceptionally clear, a feature that delights local bathers but deeply unsettles those who actually understand the ecosystem. Sébastien Pittet, a veteran boat operator, observes that the lake is simply too pristine. This unnatural clarity is the work of the Quagga mussel, a highly efficient filter feeder that strips the water of nutrients, effectively starving the native fish populations.
Over the past decade, this invasive species has aggressively colonized Swiss waters. With the notable exceptions of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, every major lake in the country has been infiltrated. The mussels do not merely disrupt the food chain; they attach themselves to any available surface, clogging water intake pipes, fouling fishing nets, and encrusting boat facilities. The resulting economic friction is substantial, prompting a characteristically Swiss response: well-funded, highly educated, and perhaps slightly naive technological intervention.
Operating out of Morges, a startup named Alien Limited is deploying underwater drones to map the invasion. Founder Carole Fonty relies on artificial intelligence to process high-resolution benthic footage into detailed three-dimensional maps. This allows engineers to instantly identify which underwater structures are being compromised by dense mussel beds. During a recent deployment, the screens quickly revealed an intake pipe entirely choked by the mollusks. The mapping technology offers a rapid, precise overview of the infrastructural threat, replacing guesswork with hard data.
Yet mapping is merely the diagnostic phase. Alien Limited is currently testing an underwater suction robot designed to vacuum the pests directly off the lakebed. Rather than simply disposing of the biological waste, the startup intends to commercialize it. The business model proposes converting the mussel meat into biogas, while the calcium-rich shells are processed into cement. Fonty notes that early trials are highly promising and the resulting cement already meets established industrial standards. It is a wonderfully pragmatic, market-oriented approach to an ecological crisis, heavily supported by cantons, foundations, and various research partners eager to fund a high-tech fix.
The scientific establishment, however, remains detached from the entrepreneurial optimism. Thomas Müller, an expert at the federal water research institute Eawag, views the drone mapping as a useful upgrade to traditional sampling methods. He is far more skeptical about the mechanical extraction. Vacuuming the lakebed inevitably damages the surviving native fauna, and the cleared zones are rapidly recolonized by the relentless Quagga.
The prevailing consensus at Eawag is stark: once the mussel establishes a foothold in a body of water, eradication is a fantasy. The ecological balance of Switzerland's lakes has been permanently altered. The invasion has peaked, and the waters will remain unnervingly clear. Still, if a local startup can successfully transform an intractable environmental disaster into industrial cement and energy, it demonstrates a productive resilience. The mussels are here to stay, but there is no reason they cannot be monetized along the way.
