The Pandemic Diaries: Fauci, Paul, and the Endless Politics of the Lab Leak
A newly released trove of private journal entries exposes the bitter feud between the former health official and his critics over the origins of Covid-19.
The debate over the origins of Covid-19 long ago ceased to be a strictly scientific inquiry, morphing instead into a partisan spectacle. The latest act features the private diaries of Dr. Anthony Fauci, a relentless congressional campaign by Senator Rand Paul, and a feud with an Australian journalist.
Ahead of a recent Senate hearing, Paul released 1,141 pages of journal entries written by the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The documents reveal the private frustrations of the 85-year-old physician, who retired in 2022. A frequent target of his ire is Sharri Markson, a News Corp journalist who heavily promoted the theory that the pandemic originated from a laboratory leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
In May 2021, Markson published an article in The Australian alleging that Chinese military scientists discussed weaponising SARS coronaviruses half a decade before the global outbreak. Fauci privately dismissed the logic of such an endeavor, questioning why any nation would engineer a biological agent equally capable of infecting its own population. Other media outlets later revealed that the supposedly alarming Chinese military document was derived from a widely available, discredited 2015 book rooted in biological warfare conspiracies.
Fauci’s diaries also targeted Markson’s book, What Really Happened in Wuhan, which alleged a Chinese cover-up and argued against any scientific consensus on a natural origin. The former chief medical adviser characterised the publication as a politically motivated assault. He specifically rejected accusations amplified in the book by American molecular biologist Richard Ebright, who accused Fauci of misleading the public regarding gain-of-function research.
The release of these private thoughts served as the prelude to a highly anticipated Senate hearing. Subpoenaed by Paul, Fauci refused to answer questions, instead characterising the senator's years-long push for his imprisonment as an unhinged campaign. The hearing yielded little new scientific insight, functioning primarily as a venue for entrenched political grievances.
Markson remains steadfast, pointing out that much of the US intelligence community now leans towards the laboratory leak hypothesis. She defended her track record of exposing financial links between Fauci’s former agency and the Wuhan Institute of Virology, noting that 65 projects at the Chinese facility were funded through the EcoHealth Alliance.
The origins of the virus remain unresolved, split between natural zoonotic spillover and the laboratory leak theory. Yet, as the publication of these diaries demonstrates, the search for biological truth has been largely eclipsed by the desire for political vindication.
