The cosmos has always provided a convenient escape from terrestrial dysfunction. For Luca Parmitano, an Italian astronaut with the European Space Agency, that escape route is NASA’s Artemis III mission. Scheduled for 2027, the operation is billed as a critical test for returning humans to the Moon. Parmitano will join three American astronauts—Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio, and Andre Douglas—making him the first European to enter orbit under the Artemis banner.

The mechanics of the mission are daunting, requiring three separate launches in tight succession. The crew will be confined to the Orion spacecraft, sharing a mere eight to nine cubic metres of habitable volume. Although designed for deep space, Orion will remain in low-Earth orbit for this particular test, where it is slated to dock with lunar landers manufactured by Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin. The involvement of these private American titans reveals where the true momentum in modern space exploration lies.

During a public presentation at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, Parmitano credited his trajectory to the Italian public education system. It is a highly romanticised view of a state apparatus better known for bureaucratic friction than for propelling citizens to the stars. Italy will undoubtedly welcome the reputational boost of having a native son in orbit, leaning on its historical prestige while others build the future. Parmitano himself characterised his homeland as his launch pad—a poetic sentiment for a nation that relies heavily on international partnerships to secure its place in modern scientific endeavours.

The astronaut also spoke warmly of a forged European identity, framing the continent's participation as an act of determination. However, the institutional reality of the European Union and its affiliated agencies is far less inspiring. The ESA operates essentially as a junior partner in this American-led venture. Europe’s primary hardware contribution is the European Service Module, providing power, oxygen, water, and thermal control to the Orion capsule. It is a vital component, but it hardly masks the underlying power imbalance.

This dependency was laid bare earlier this year when NASA unilaterally decided to pause development on the Lunar Gateway, a planned space station in lunar orbit. The decision instantly altered Europe’s anticipated contributions, which had included key modules for the station. The episode perfectly illustrates the fundamental weakness of the European machine: heavy on bureaucratic grandstanding and lofty rhetoric, yet entirely beholden to decisions made in Washington. The lack of independent capability leaves Europe as a passenger rather than a driver.

Parmitano insists that political friction between Europe and the United States does not extend into orbit, noting that the crew functions solely as operators rather than politicians. He maintains that the transatlantic partnership in space remains robust and focused on common goals. Yet, as the highly ambitious 2027 deadline approaches, the dynamic is unmistakable. Europe is permitted to provide the life support, but America dictates the schedule and commands the ship.
