Chemical Tank Bursts at Washington State Packaging Plant – One Dead, Nine Missing

A chemical tank holding more than 3.4 million liters of liquid has burst at a packaging company in the northwestern United States. At least one person is dead. Nine employees remain missing following Tuesday's incident in the small city of Longview, according to fire department officials. Nine others were injured, including one firefighter. Several of the injured are in critical condition.

The facility manufactures cardboard containers for liquids. The tank that ruptured contained white liquor, a caustic chemical used in industrial processes. Fire department officials said the cleanup and recovery operation remains dangerous. The tank, which still contains liquid, is at risk of collapsing. Residents in the surrounding area are not considered directly threatened at this time.

Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson expressed his condolences to those affected. In a post on the social media platform X, Ferguson wrote that his thoughts are with the workers, their families, and the first responders. Teams from the Environmental Protection Department and the workplace safety authority are on site. The National Guard has also been placed on alert.

The incident comes just days after a separate chemical emergency in southern California, where the threat of an explosion from a tank containing a highly flammable chemical forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. Nearly all evacuees have since been allowed to return, but fire officials have not yet issued a complete all-clear.

For now, in Longview, nine people are missing, one is confirmed dead, and a massive tank of corrosive liquid is threatening to collapse. The National Guard is waiting. The governor is watching. And the families are waiting for news that may not come.
