Washington has long understood the political utility of military academies. Annapolis and West Point do not merely train personnel; they project institutionality and national prestige. At NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Texas, President Donald Trump unveiled his intent to extend this tradition into orbit by signing an executive order to establish the US Space Academy. Presenting the initiative alongside the honored crew of the Artemis II mission, Trump framed the institution as a premier training ground for the country’s future space cadre.

The proposed academy aims to funnel elite graduates directly into the US Space Force, NASA, and the commercial flight sector. To shepherd the project into existence, the executive order creates a specialized advisory commission. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman will head the panel, joined by key administration figures including Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink, and White House budget director Russ Vought.

The initiative aligns with a broader effort to formalize American doctrine above the atmosphere. During his previous term in December 2019, Trump signed the legislation establishing the Space Force as the military’s sixth branch, explicitly positioning orbit as a strategic priority. At the time, Trump declared that the Space Force will help us deter aggression and control the ultimate high ground amid rising national security threats.

Friday’s ceremony featured no shortage of ceremonial polish. Trump presented the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the nation's highest civilian award for spaceflight achievement, to the Artemis II crew—NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. In return, the crew presented the president with a blue NASA flight jacket. The decorated team completed a historic trajectory around the far side of the moon in April, a key benchmark in the administration's stated objective to land astronauts back on the lunar surface by 2028.

Yet institutional ambitions continue to bump up against technical realities on the ground. The broader Artemis initiative faces an uncertain operational timeline, highlighted by an unmanned Blue Origin rocket explosion in May that damaged a Cape Canaveral launch facility. NASA modified its trajectory for Artemis III in February, shifting its objective from an immediate lunar landing to orbital docking drills with lander concepts from SpaceX and Blue Origin. While new crew members were assigned in June for next year's two-week mission, the gap between grand administrative declarations and orbital execution remains formidable.
