To achieve this curated blackout, the Prado enlisted the design studio AMB Piensa, which leaned heavily on artificial intelligence. The technical execution relied on video-generation models to calculate how shadows would lengthen, how reflections would shift, and how the progressive darkening would alter the perception of depth within the two-dimensional canvases. The algorithm was fed complex visual instructions to simulate the eclipse's advance across architectural elements, characters, and landscapes. However, the studio stopped short of full automation. Human technicians manually adjusted the AI-generated sequences to ensure the technological intervention did not completely overwrite the original pictorial techniques of the Old Masters.

The roster of paintings subjected to this digital eclipse includes some of the most celebrated works in European art history. Diego Velázquez's 'Las Meninas' and 'La fragua de Vulcano' are featured alongside Francisco de Goya's 'El quitasol' and 'La pradera de San Isidro'. The experiment also extends to pieces by Peter Paul Rubens, Albrecht Dürer, Jusepe de Ribera, Claude Lorrain, and Carlos de Haes. By artificially stripping away the gallery's standard lighting—a luxury that relies on Spain's often strained and underfunded power grid—the project reveals nuances that everyday observation leaves obscured.

The upcoming 2026 eclipse is already generating considerable anticipation across a country that could arguably use a distraction from its domestic woes. By merging an astronomical phenomenon with artificial intelligence, the Prado is attempting to position itself at the intersection of heritage and innovation. It is an intriguing, if slightly gimmicky, method of questioning how much of our appreciation for art depends entirely on the illumination under which it is viewed. Whether simulated shadows will foster a genuine appreciation for classical art among reluctant audiences is uncertain, but it provides a polished, high-tech spectacle in a nation where structural reliability is increasingly hard to find.
