K-Pop Rules the 2026 American Music Awards as BTS Makes History

BTS becomes first Asian act to win Artist of the Year twice; Katseye crowned New Artist of the Year; KPop Demon Hunters takes Song of the Year for 'Golden'.

Taylor Swift entered the 2026 American Music Awards as the leading contender with eight nominations. She left empty-handed. The night belonged to K-pop, as the genre continued its worldwide domination at the ceremony held last night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

South Korean band BTS became the first Asian act to receive the AMA's Artist of the Year award twice, having first won it in 2021. The ceremony marked BTS's first appearance at a major awards show in four years. The band took a hiatus in 2022 while its seven members completed South Korea's mandatory military service. BTS returned this year with their new album, 'Arirang'.

BTS won all three categories in which they were nominated: Best Male K-pop Artist, Song of the Summer for 'Swim', and Artist of the Year – the ceremony's top award. In that category, the seven-piece triumphed over Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, Harry Styles, and Lady Gaga. Accepting the award, BTS leader RM thanked their fans, the BTS ARMY, noting that they made it once again. He said their biggest thanks and gratitude goes to armies all over the world who have stood by them for 13 years. Receiving such a big award again after completing military service means even more, he added, especially since the award was decided entirely by public ballot. AMA nominees are selected based on commercial performance, but winners are determined by fan votes.

Elsewhere, K-pop continued to dominate. BTS's label partners Katseye were crowned New Artist of the Year. KPop Demon Hunters had quite a night as well. The song 'Golden', from Netflix's animated hit film, was named Song of the Year, beating other favorites including Taylor Swift's 'The Fate of Ophelia', Morgan Wallen's 'I'm the Problem', and Alex Warren's 'Ordinary'. KPop Demon Hunters also won Best Soundtrack, while 'Golden' picked up a second prize for Best Vocal Performance.

Among other winners, Sabrina Carpenter took home Album of the Year for 'Man's Best Friend' and Best Female Pop Artist. Shakira won Tour of the Year for Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. Cardi B dominated hip-hop categories, winning Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Best Hip-Hop Song for 'ErrTime', and Best Hip-Hop Album for 'Am I the Drama?'. Bruno Mars won Best Male R&B Artist, Best R&B Song for 'I Just Might', and Best R&B Album for 'The Romantic'. Bad Bunny won Best Male Latin Artist and Best Latin Song for 'NUEVAYoL'.

For one night in Las Vegas, K-pop sat at the top of the American music industry. BTS made history, Katseye took the spotlight, and Taylor Swift went home with nothing – proof that the AMAs, like the fans who vote for them, have moved on. Whether the rest of the world follows is no longer a question. It already has.
